celery experiment (transpiration)

This experiment requires patience as its take a day or 2 to see the results.
It is very easy and you can get the things you need from the local supermarket. The experiment demonstrates how water travels up a plant to supply the leaves and flowers with the water it needs to grow and thrive.

You need:

* A few stalks of celery
* Water
* food colouring (we found the red and blue work best)

You an empty jar, glass or small vase and add water and food colouring.

You then get your stalks of celery and cut a small amount off the bottom to get a fresh part of the stalk and place it in the water. (If you can use the stalks with leaves then you may find the leaves change colour)

We chose 3 colours to do at the same time to compare the results between colours.

You then just need to wait 24 to 48 to see the result. We peeled the top layer of the celery back and you could see the coloured water had traveled up the stalk.

We are going to try this experiment again with white flowers. If you take all the leaves off then the water should travel straight up to the flower and begin to change the colour of the petals. We are looking forward to attempting this in the next few weeks so keep an eye out on our Instagram page for the results.
